A group of children have had their Christmas party saved, thanks to the actions of generous Islanders.

Last week in the Times Guardian, we reported that thieves who stole lead from the roof of Pipsqueaks Nursery in Queenborough had cost the youngsters their Halloween and Christmas parties.

Staff at the centre were forced to use the money they had saved for the celebrations to pay for repairs.

But Islanders were quick to step in and it looks like the children will have a party after all.

After reading our story, staff at the Westminster Cafe along Brielle Way decided to put out a donation box to collect money and pay for a party.

They have replaced their staff tip box with the box for Pipsqueaks.

Val Elvy, who runs the cafe, said she would encourage her customers to pop a few pennies in the box.

She said: “If children are in need then we try and help them out.”

And owner of Pipsqueaks Lindsay Harris said she has had her faith restored after several other kind-hearted people gave them donations.

She said: “It’s unbelievable.

“People have been so kind and generous – it’s lovely.

“The scum in the world are just a minority. There really are some wonderful people out there.”

Lindsay added that whatever money is left over from the donations after paying for a Christmas party will be donated to charity.

Staff at Pipsqueaks have been keeping track of people who have donated money to them, and all are invited to join them for a mince pie at the Christmas party.

Now it’s all go for the Christmas party, Pipsqueaks needs a Father Christmas. If you know of any suitable candidates, please contact the nursery on 01795 666420.
