A Southern Water spokesperson said: “Our crews have been out to investigate and the surface water on the A289 has now subsided.

“The extremely heavy rain that fell overnight and this morning meant our sewer system, which carries both wastewater and surface water, became overwhelmed. As a result, the rainwater didn’t drain away as quickly as normal.

“The council has put out road signs warning motorists of possible dangers.”

Commuters are also facing delays after a landslip in Cuxton blocked the railway track.

Engineers are currently on their way to the incident, which happened shortly before 10.30am.

Rochester Cathedral is currently without power, after rainwater got into the fuse box. But despite the incident, they are still open to visitors who wish to shelter from the rain.

There were earlier delays in the Medway Tunnel, westbound, after a four vehicle crash.

One lane was closed between A289 Barrack Road and Maritime Way, but has since reopened.
