Firework blast shatters phone box

A FIREWORK was used to detonate a telephone box in Lenham, near Maidstone, last night. It follows a recent spate of explosions in call boxes in the Medway Towns and similar incidents in the West Malling area.

Vandals blew up the glass box at the junction of Sandway Road and Headcorn Road at about 10.20pm.

Five panels of glass were shattered, the door was loosened and the framework of the box was buckled.

Splinters of glass were spread widely around the area, and some had scratched a car parked nearby.

Police spokeswoman Gianna Pollero said: "We want to put a stop to this as quickly as we can. This crime is extremely dangerous and we are lucky that nobody so far has been injured as a result of an incident like this."

Anyone with information is asked to contact investigating officer Det Sgt Vicki Withnall on 01622 608182.
